Influencers, vloggers, content creators and YouTubers in North Macedonia are now officially part of the country’s media system and, under specific conditions, are required to register with the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services (AVMS).
Following amendments to the media legislation adopted in July 2023, the law for the first time acknowledges the role and impact of individuals who provide audiovisual media services on demand through video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and similar services.
According to the Agency, registration is mandatory for creators who meet all of the following criteria: they distribute audiovisual content via video-sharing platforms; have more than 10,000 followers or subscribers; generate economic benefit from their content; have published at least 24 audiovisual items in the past 12 months; and exercise editorial responsibility with the aim of informing, educating or entertaining the public.
These obligations are regulated through a dedicated Rulebook that defines the form and content of the application for entry in the Register of On-Demand Audiovisual Media Service Providers.
The Agency is calling on all influencers, vloggers, content creators and YouTubers who meet the criteria to submit their registration in the shortest possible time, stressing that this is a legal obligation.
All relevant documents, guidelines and application forms are available on the Agency’s official website (www.avmu.mk) under the special section “Influencers/Vloggers”. For additional information, interested parties can contact the Agency at influenseri@avmu.mk.
The move marks a significant shift in the national media landscape, positioning digital creators not only as online personalities but also as formally recognised media actors, with corresponding rights, responsibilities and accountability to the public.
