Many respondents expressed concerns about accuracy, transparency, and fairness. The survey suggests that public acceptance of AI in journalism is conditional, tied to visible human oversight, clear disclosure, and responsible editorial standards.

A new global survey by the Reuters Institute reveals that use of generative AI is rapidly expanding, yet trust in fully AI-produced news remains low.
The 2025 report, which polled people across six countries: Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK and the US, finds that weekly use of standalone AI tools such as ChatGPT rose from 18% in 2024 to 34% in 2025. Meanwhile, awareness of generative AI jumped too, reaching 90%.
According to the report, “the proportion of people who have ever used a standalone generative AI system such as ChatGPT jumped from 40% to 61%, while weekly usage nearly doubled from 18% to 34%. ChatGPT remains the most popular system with 22% weekly usage, though adoption varies significantly by age.”
The report also notes that “information-seeking has become the primary use-case for AI, more than doubling to 24% weekly usage and surpassing media creation. Specialised uses such as news consumption remain limited at 6%, and trust is concentrated among major brands, with ChatGPT again leading the field, though most users remain occasional rather than regular adopters.”
Despite soaring use, audiences remain cautious about AI-authored journalism. Only 12% said they are comfortable with news that is entirely produced by AI, compared with 62% who prefer news created fully by humans. Comfort rises modestly to 21% , when AI output is reviewed by humans, and to 43% when AI simply assists human journalists.
Many respondents expressed concerns about accuracy, transparency, and fairness. The survey suggests that public acceptance of AI in journalism is conditional, tied to visible human oversight, clear disclosure, and responsible editorial standards.
The report concludes that while generative AI is becoming a normal part of news consumption and creation, trust in AI-only journalism remains limited. For AI’s integration into media to succeed, transparency and human editorial responsibility will be crucial.
